History of Charlotte, Michigan

The area that now makes up Charlotte was first settled by European settlers in 1836, when Elijah Wilcoxen purchased 160 acres from the United States Government and established what he called “Wilcoxen’s Settlement”. In 1847, Wilcoxen donated 40 acres to build a public square which would later become known as “Charlotte” after his daughter who had recently passed away. The town was officially incorporated as a village in 1848 and as a city in 1873.

In its early days, Charlotte was primarily an agricultural community with corn and wheat being two of the main crops grown in the area. During this time, several mills were built along the Grand River providing economic opportunities for local farmers to process their grains into flour or feed for livestock. By 1880, Charlotte had become an important hub for railroad transportation due to its central location between Detroit and Chicago and its proximity to Lake Michigan ports such as Saginaw Bay and Muskegon Harbor.

Charlotte, Michigan is a small city of 8,000 residents located in the south-central part of the state. It is governed by a mayor and six-member city council. The mayor is directly elected by the people of Charlotte, and the council members are elected from three districts. The current mayor is Christopher J. Spadafore, who was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.

The city council meets every first and third Monday of each month to discuss important issues such as budgets, taxes, infrastructure projects, zoning regulations, public safety initiatives and economic development strategies. Each member brings their own unique perspective on how to best serve the citizens of Charlotte.
